Thompson’s Sanitary Service unveiled it’s newest recycling program this month just as the Newport schools are opening their doors for the start of the school year. Crayon recycling, the latest recycling program brought to you by Thompson’s, collects crayon tidbits for the ultimate full circle recycling as new crayons.
Once the crayon cast-offs are deposited in the drop-off bins located throughout Newport, Thompson’s sends them to the National Crayon Recycling Program where they’re given new life. The Program then melts the crayons and pours them into designer molds, where they’re sold on the Crazy Crayons website as funding for the program. This program has stopped more than 46,000 pounds of unwanted crayons going into landfills.
The main crayon drop-off site is located at the TSS office at 7450 NE Avery Street in Newport. At the same time, the local schools have partnered with Thompson’s to allow drop-off containers at Sam Case Elementary and Newport Intermediate where student’s families can have a convenient place to get rid of their unwanted crayons. It’s not necessary to do any prep to the crayons, but please leave on the wrappers if you can as that helps with color sorting especially for the black, purple, and blue hues. Not only is the crayon wax recycled, but the program has also put together an ingenious “fire starter” package that include the castoff crayon labels.
